DUBROVNIK CITY WALLS with a length of 1940 meters surround the famous Old Town and include 5 fortresses and 16 towers and bastions. Open-air museum, accessible through 3 entrances – near the church of St. Luke in the east, near the church of St. Spasa immediately after entering the old city center from Pila and near the Maritime Museum – the fortress of St. Ivan. Of the 5 fortresses, 3 are an integral part of the walls – Minčeta, Bokar and St. Ivan, and 2 are freestanding, Lovrijenac in the west and Revelin in the east.

LOVRIJENAC, is a symbol of Dubrovnik’s freedom that rises on a 37-meter-high cliff. At the entrance, there is an inscription NON BENE PRO TOTO LIBERTAS VENDITUR AURO, which means Freedom is not sold for all the wealth in the world. Today, a large number of well-known works are performed in Lovrijenac during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, and one of the most famous is Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”.

STRADUN has 2 main entrances, the eastern one at Ploče and the western one at Pile. Passing through the Gate of Pile, you reach the main city street Place or Stradun, upon entering through the Gate you can meet costumed city guards. Stradun is the widest and most beautiful city street that divides the old city center into the northern and southern parts. At the eastern beginning of Stradun is located the Great Onofrio’s Fountain, which was named after the builder of the Dubrovnik waterworks in the 15th century. Apart from it, on Stradun there is one of the most beautiful palaces in the city, the monumental Gothic-Renaissance Sponza Palace, which today houses the Dubrovnik State Archives. Orlando’s column, a symbol of statehood, which also adorns Stradun, is a figure of a medieval knight with a sword, a typical Gothic smile on his face, which belongs to the most beautiful Rolands of Europe.

SRĐ hill, which rises above Dubrovnik, is the perfect place for a panoramic photo. On it stands out the monumental Imperial fortress, built during the Napoleonic occupation. During the Homeland War, it played a very important role as the first line of defense of Dubrovnik. In the Imperial Fortress, there is a museum display of the Homeland War where you can see exhibits of weapons and shells that fell on the city during the bombing, documents and a video presentation of the wartime in Dubrovnik and its suffering.

KNEŽEV DVOR, one of the most significant monuments of profane architecture on the Croatian coast. The prince lived in the palace during his one-month mandate. The palace had a hall for the Small Council, the Council of Petitioners, an apartment for the prince, a courtroom, an office, a notary, prisons, and a warehouse. Above the preserved entrance door we read OBLITI PRIVATORUM PUBLICA CURATE in the translation Forget private affairs, deal with state affairs. Today, the Duke’s Palace is the cultural and historical department of the Dubrovnik Museum, where you can see antique furniture, paintings by Italian and local masters. The museum has a collection of the Republic of Dubrovnik, a collection of weapons and a collection of items from the “Domus Christi” pharmacy from the 15th century. Concerts are also held in the Duke’s Palace due to its excellent acoustics.

THE MARITIME MUSEUM is located in the fortress of St. Ivan. In the past, this fortress protected the entrance to the city harbor and was one of the most important in the defense of the city. Today, it has more than 15,000 items in 15 collections. It has a rich library with more than 11 thousand titles of professional maritime and related literature. Since 1998, the Museum has been a member of the Association of Mediterranean Maritime Museums based in Barcelona. It is one of the leading museums in Croatia with a maritime theme.
